Neymar underwent surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus earlier this month after suffering a left knee injury. His recovery is expected to last until mid-2024.
This 31-year-old star is the number 1 scorer of the Brazilian team. Without Neymar, interim coach Fernando Diniz is not too worried as he has a talented young team in his hands.
“Nobody has to worry about taking on Neymar’s role,” he told reporters. We have an extremely talented generation. Many people could take on this role, but it is important that we do not place that burden on them.
The players should feel light and in a state of trying their best. They will naturally have the position of striker”.
Diniz said players like Barcelona’s Raphinha, Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior, or Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus can also shine in Neymar’s absence.
The 39-year-old coach also called up prodigy Endrick and this is the first time this 17-year-old teenager has been recruited.
“Endrick is here because of his effort and his great future potential,” Diniz said. We don’t have to expect everything to be perfect from a 17-year-old Endrick. I see huge potential. He could become one of the legendary players of Brazilian football, but time will tell.”
Brazil is currently ranked third in the 2026 World Cup qualifying round in South America. They have the same 7 points as second-placed Uruguay and Venezuela in 4th place. Argentina is leading with 12 points after 4 wins. This month, Brazil will face two teams, Colombia and Argentina.
